Mikro Updates
by posted 07/02/2020

Afternoon,

It was a nice start for Mikro last night. I think there were some nerves coming into the 1st game, but the boys settled in nicely. Last season, we had 5 weeks of practice before our 1st game. This year we had 11 days to work with and we squeezed all we could into them.

It was a nice team win with our pitchers delivering a combine 10 strikeouts with solid catcher play, timely hitting (with 7 different players getting hits) and smart baserunning, and some nice plays in the field. We had nine hits last night and put 17 balls into play. The boys delivered on our asks and we could not be prouder of them.

The boys earned tonight off. Right now, I do not have anything scheduled Friday-Sunday. Please have a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend.

We will be back at it next week with a congested schedule starting Monday. I may do something optional Sunday evening to keep warm for Monday’s game. Right now, I am leaning towards a nice break for all. If we do add something, it will be optional.

Best,

Keith

Mikro Updates
by posted 06/30/2020

All,

Wow, the weather just does not want to cooperate. The radars were hit or miss on the rain tonight. It looked promising and then it did not. Mostly light sprinkles from what I have seen throughout the rest of tonight, but not something I would cancel practice for. I think someone on Guttermaster shouted “lightning” at the field, so we were put on a 30-minute safety delay at the start of practice. With a shortened practice tonight already planned it did not make sense to wait the 30 safety minutes to practice for an hour or less in spotty weather.

Sorry for those that showed up to have to turn back around. Both the majors game and minors scrimmage at Legion were cancelled between 5:30-6pm as well with all the kids there ready o play. These sorts of nights are always difficult to call in advance. I know I personally appreciate that the coaches want to be there vs taking a convenient reason to cancel early after a hard day at work.

We have our 1st game tomorrow vs Olender’s. The game is set to be played at 6pm, so please arrive for 5:30 or earlier. The weather is again supposed to be tricky, but please plan on arriving as if we will be playing. I will send an update tomorrow if it looks like he weather will cooperate for BP before the game. Should our game be cancelled, we will be playing our make-up on Friday evening. Should Friday be cancelled (looks like rain again) it will be scheduled for next week. We have a game on Mon, Wed, and Fri next week, so it could be Tuesday or Thursday.

The league has added 4 games with Ellington teams to our schedule in August. To do so, four of our game dates have been moved to Fridays during July. Please review the updated schedule and let me know of any conflicts or vacations that will cause you to miss games. We can’t play if we have less than 9 players, so it is important to the entire team that you make me aware of any games you will miss early on so we can plan in advance or look for call up players.

Tomorrow: Practice Location Change
by posted 06/28/2020

Evening,

We saw the good the bad and the ugly with our 2 scrimmages over the weekend. I always like to remind parents that scrimmages are meaningless as far as the score or having a winner or loser. Each manager is seeking to get something different out of them. We were looking to see what guys could do in different positions and spots and gave guys shots at positions they might not get to play during the regular season. Sometimes that can look rough when we see lots of errors or learn that some positions may not be good fits for games.

We got some great insight regarding our players abilities. In both scrimmages we were able to get each player in the infield for at least an inning. We did look much better in game 2 with limiting mistakes and looked a lot sharper. For our new parents, the outfield is highly active compared to the minors and our guys must be ready to field balls. I usually do not use players names, but since they are coaches’ kids I will. Both Jimmy and Liam who are all-star starters played exclusively in the outfield their initial major’s seasons. Liam only played 3 innings in the infield his 1st season and almost exclusively in right field. He platooned almost every game, but when it was his time he performed. Please help us reinforce our outfielder’s value and need to be ready when they are called on. Just a reminder for parents that the benches are an extension of the dugouts. During a game, we would ask parents to please keep their distance from the players.

I moved practice over to Legion Batting Cages tomorrow. We ran a bit over tonight, so I am going to cut practice back to 60 minutes. When practice is over at 6:30pm players are free to leave or stay and watch the back half of the 1st majors’ game (Elks vs Olenders). It looks like there is another chance of rain up until 4pm tomorrow, so please stay close to your devices in case we cancel practice last-minute.

Reminder: Scrimmage Tonight at East
by posted 06/26/2020

All,

Just a quick reminder that we have our 1st scrimmage tonight on Legion East at 5:45pm. Please arrive for 5:15pm to warm-up. I'll be there around 4:30pm for anyone that wants extra batting practice (optional).

Please have the boys wear their Mikro practice shirt. As a reminder, please social distance from other families while at the park vs packing into the stands like traditional years. The outfield fence at East offers a great view of the game and give you room to move around.

Best,

Keith

Tomorrow: Practice Location Change
by posted 06/24/2020

All,

Thanks for everyone for being willing to stay a bit later tonight. I was able to secure our team to be used for the umpire service's training tonight and they got started late. There were many pro's for us as a team... like getting a look at what the umps will be doing behind the mound and giving our players an early look at any changes to the strike zone. For our new players, it was a look at faster pitching and a faster game before our first scrimmage Friday evening.

My turf meeting at the high school ran a little longer than expected, but Matt and Tim did a great job keeping things running.

I made a location change to our practice tomorrow. We will now be at the Henry batting cages. I'm also giving you and the players 30 minutes back. We will end practice at 7PM tomorrow.

For Friday we are back at Henry.  Our scrimmage is at 5:45pm. Please wear your Mikro practice shirt (not your game jersey) with full baseball attire and hat. I’ll ask that all players arrive at 5:15pm (30 minutes before a game), so we will start getting ready for the season by doing that.  I also get to the fields early for most games to have optional BP. Any player that wants to get extra cuts tomorrow can arrive at 4:30 to take swings in the cage. This 4:30-5:15 time is completely optional.

Best,

Keith

Proactively Address Hydration
by posted 06/22/2020

Team,

Sorry for the back to back communications. As we do our best to focus on keeping the kids and equipment virus free we also need to proactively address hydration. Just a reminder for you and your players that it is imperative for everyone to hydrate. Attached are a couple of PDF's on what to look for in case of dehydration and the link to the Little League page regarding the importance of keeping the kids drinking enough fluids. I think it is common sense stuff here, but still want to pass this on.
